Chapter 43: Every Door

Nora's POV

I didn't shift.

I stood in the doorway of the den with the hammer hanging from my hand.

I let my wolf look at his.

She came up behind my eyes without a sound, and I felt her ears flatten and then lift.

His wolf crouched at the end of the chain, with the gold of his eyes burning in the dark.

He was watching me, and he was not Ronan.

"Hello, you," I said.

The chain rang as he shifted his weight.

I walked in and sat down on the stone floor, an arm's length beyond the end of the chain.

I put the hammer down beside me.

Then I took off my shoes, and I waited.

I talked to him for an hour.

I told him about Hazel's first tooth, which hadn't come in yet.

I told him that Tilly had decided to marry the south sentry, and the sentry had not yet been informed.

I told him that I was frightened of the run, and that I was not going to stop.

Somewhere in the second hour, the gold dimmed.

It faded to amber, and then to brown.

Ronan's own eyes looked out at me from his face, exhausted and wet.

"I threw the key away," he said.

"I know. I heard it ring."

"I would have gone to her room."

"You didn't."

"I stopped at the door," he said. "Only the door."

"That's all that counts."

He shut his eyes.

I crawled across the stone and put my arms around his bare shoulders.

I held him until the sky went gray in the broken doorway.

"I'm going across at dawn for Dane," he said, into my hair.

"No."

"Nora..."

"Give me three days.

I'm going to every door in the valley.

When I'm done, if Dane's not home, we cross together."

He was silent.

"Do you agree?" I said. "I'm asking."

Something like a smile crossed his face.

"Three days," he said. "Go and do it."

Tilly came up the ridge with the key in her fist before I had my shoes on.
