Chapter 45: Hunt Moon

The Hunt Moon came up over the ridge, huge and orange.

Both packs stood on the gravel at the ford, with the creek between them.

A ring of stakes had been pounded into the bank.

Our side was three hundred wolves deep.

The south dormitory stood in the front row with their arms folded.

The widows sat on folding chairs.

Tilly had Hazel in a sling on her chest, and the south sentry held her elbow.

Ronan stood at the edge of the ring in his shirtsleeves.

He had not said a word since we left the house.

I took off my sweater and my boots.

Dane stepped up beside me.

"I'm here," he said. "I'm only here."

"Thank you."

Across the ring, Boyd Satterfield took off his coat.

He folded it over the arm of the bearded man, and he smiled at me with his mouth wide open.

The silver caps shone on his back teeth, on both sides, polished clean.

"Luna," he said. "A fair fight."

"Blackwater custom," I said.

"Blackwater custom."

I looked at Ronan.

He was gray in the moonlight, and his eyes were amber, and his hands hung straight at his sides.

He nodded once.

I let my wolf come up.

It was easy now.

She rose through me at once, and my skin gave way to white fur.

I came down on four feet on the cold gravel, bigger than any wolf in the valley.

The whole bank sighed.

Boyd changed with a grunt.

He was a thick gray wolf with a scarred muzzle.

When he opened his jaws the silver flashed in the moonlight.

We circled.

He was patient.

He had fought in a pit for forty years, and he wanted me to come first.

I did.

I went in low for his foreleg, and he turned and caught me across the flank, high on the right.
