Chapter 5: Go to Bed, Birthday Girl

"Something is sitting on her," I told Ronan that night, "and the healer says it isn't me."

We were in the yard behind his house, under a half-moon, with the pines black against the sky.

He had his sleeves rolled to the elbow and his boots off.

I stood in front of him barefoot in the cold grass, in a long T-shirt and leggings, feeling stupid.

"Did she give you a name for it?" he asked.

"She wouldn't. She said she needed to see it with the moon up."

"Then we'll let the moon up."

He walked around behind me, and the hairs on my arms rose.

"Wolves come to the Alpha's voice at night," he said. "The young ones answer first. Close your eyes."

I closed them.

"Breathe in until your ribs push out. Don't think about it. Just let her hear you."

I breathed.

The grass was wet and the air smelled of pine needles and the cold coming down off the ridge.

Behind me, he let out a long slow breath of his own.

"Not like that," he said. "You're breathing in your throat."

"I'm breathing the only way I know."

"Then I'll show you."

His hands came around my sides and settled low on my ribs, one on each, with the thumbs along my spine.

I forgot about the grass.

His palms were wide enough that his fingers nearly met across my stomach.

Through the cotton, I felt every ridge of his hand and the steady heat of it.
