Chapter 5: Coffee on the Floor

The breakfast room had a table for twenty and six people at it, and every one of them watched me carry the coffee in.

Augustin sat at the head with his cane hooked on his chair.

Rosalind sat halfway down in a cream blouse, with a plate of fruit she wasn't eating.

Across from her sat a man I had never met, heavy in the jaw, with fair hair slicked straight back.

His navy blazer cost more than my rent.

He had Phillip's height and none of his stillness.

"Dewitt," Augustin said, without looking up from his paper. "The cook."

"The cook with the eye," Dewitt said.

He smiled at me, and I felt the smile in my stomach.

"Cataract at twenty-something? That's rough. Do you see me at all, or just a shape?"

"I see you fine, sir," I said.

"Funny. Most people who see me fine don't look so disappointed."

Rosalind laughed into her napkin.

I set the silver pot down at Augustin's elbow and moved around the table with the second pot, keeping my chin turned to my right.

Dewitt's chair was pushed out into the aisle at an angle, and I had to pass behind it.

I saw his foot move.

I saw it too late, because it was on my blind side.

His ankle hooked mine, and I went forward with a hot silver pot in both hands.

I caught the table edge with my hip, and the pot flew.

Coffee went across Rosalind's lap and down the front of her blouse.

She screamed.

It was an actress's scream, the kind with a pause in it for the room to catch up.

"You stupid, stupid girl!"

She stood up with the dark stain spreading on the cream silk, and her chair went over backward.
