Chapter 7: Six Years Old

I had my jacket half on and my braid undone, and Rosalind DeGraff was smiling at me over her phone.

I went for her.

I got three steps before Phillip's arm closed around my waist and stopped me.

"Stay," he said low.

He crossed the room in the open shirt and bare feet and held out his hand.

"Phone."

"Darling, it's evidence."

"Of what?"

"That my husband is sleeping with the help."

Her voice shook with a rage she tried to turn into hurt.

"I sent it already. To Dewitt."

I felt cold from my scalp to my heels.

"Good," Phillip said.

Rosalind blinked.

"Let him have it. Let him print it."

"I'm sorry. I'll go."

"Don't." He turned me toward him and held my face in both hands. "Do you want to go?"

"I want my daughter to be safe."

"She is."

"You can't promise that."

"Watch me," Phillip said.

He kissed my forehead.
