Chapter 17: The Study

I did not argue with the lawyer.

I stood on the sidewalk with my hand around a key that no longer fit.

I watched the movers slide the last box into the van.

The doors shut.

The van pulled out past the live oak, and the lawyer followed in a grey sedan, and the street went quiet.

"They took the study," I said.

"They took a study," said the caretaker.

I turned.

He was still at the wall in his pajamas, with the flashlight pointing at his slippers.

"Your grandfather had me bolt a second door the summer he died," he said.

"He told me it was for the instruments."

"What instruments?"

"I never asked. I mowed the lawn and I held the ladder." He shrugged his thin shoulders. "I think it was for you."

He led me around the stone wall and through his own garden, past a rusted wheelbarrow.

We came out at the back of my grandfather's house.

There was a low iron hatch in the foundation under a trellis of old wisteria.

The padlock was brass and the size of a fist.

The old man took a ring of keys from his pajama pocket and found it without looking.
