Chapter 25: The Board of Hallett
The Hallett boardroom sat on the fiftieth floor behind a wall of glass.
At nine o'clock on Monday there were eight chairs around the table and a ninth against the wall for me.
The CFO had put me there herself.
"You're a witness," she said. "Say nothing unless they ask."
Gilbert sat at the middle of the long side, without the wheelchair, in a dark suit I hadn't seen in a year.
He looked as if the suit had been hung on him.
Braxton sat at the head of the table, and he had dressed for a funeral that wasn't his.
He stood to speak.
"Directors," he said. "Thank you for coming on short notice."
Nobody answered.
"There has been a very difficult weekend," he said.
"A launch problem, and a history problem."
"Both are being handled by a CEO who has the confidence of the staff."
He turned to the glass.
Behind it in the corridor, twenty or thirty people stood with their arms folded, waiting.
