Chapter 13: Marty's Couch
Marty's kitchen smelled like burnt toast and wet dog, and I had slept three hours on the couch next to it.
Four kids sat at the table in pajamas, eating cereal and staring at me.
The oldest was a girl of twelve with her mother's frown.
"Are you the man who got Dad fired?" she asked.
"Marty quit," I said. "I just made it easy."
"Mom says you owe us a dishwasher."
"Mom is a smart woman."
"Mom is standing right here," said Marty's wife, from the stove.
She slid a plate of eggs in front of me and did not smile.
Marty came in last, in his undershirt, and for once he did not make a joke.
"Sit down, Nick," he said, although I was already sitting.
"I'm going to say this once, and then I'm going to feed you."
"Okay."
"You walked out of a ballroom last night in front of two hundred people, and you didn't call."
"I needed to think."
"You left twelve guys standing next to a car under a sheet."
