Chapter 10: The Family Dinner
The Kenyon dining room had fourteen chairs and a crystal chandelier.
Elise stood in the doorway at eight o'clock with her mother at her shoulder and her daughter asleep in a carrier on her chest.
The room went silent.
Calvin's mother sat at the head of the table in pearls. She lowered her fork.
"This is a private family dinner," she said.
"Then it's lucky I'm family," Margaret Harrow said. "I'm the thirty percent at your husband's old table."
A cousin coughed into a napkin.
Calvin pushed back his chair. "Ellie, you shouldn't be out of the hospital."
"I came to eat," Elise said. "Is there a plate for me?"
"There is not," said his mother.
She pointed a remote at the screen on the wall.
"Since you are here, let's all see what kind of mother you are."
The screen lit up.
It showed a living room in ruins, with glass on the floor and a woman in the middle holding a hammer.
Then the yard, and a fire, and a woman in a nightgown with her face lit orange.
The cousins stared. A man whispered, "Is that the baby's nanny running?"
"Your son's wife burned down half his home," Calvin's mother said to the table. "She attacked my nephew's wife and she screamed in front of a newborn."
"She's unstable. Calvin has every right to ask a court to protect that child."
Calvin lowered his eyes, the picture of a pained husband.
"I didn't want it to come to this, Mother."
"Of course you didn't," Elise said.
She took out her phone and walked to the screen.
"Does anyone mind if I add to the program?" she asked. "I have one too."
