Chapter 17: The Vote
The shareholders' lunch was set for noon on the fortieth floor of Kenyon Development.
Nobody ate.
Fourteen people sat around the long table under the glass ceiling, with chicken going cold in front of them.
Calvin arrived last, in a charcoal suit, with his assistant carrying his papers.
He took the chair at the head of the table without looking at anyone.
"Thank you all for coming," he said. "I know it's been a loud week. I want to start by saying the company is strong."
"Sit down for a moment before you go on," said Margaret Harrow.
She sat at the far end in her camel coat.
Elise sat one chair behind her, with her hands folded and her daughter's hospital bracelet still on her wrist.
Calvin's eyes crossed the table and found Elise.
"This is a shareholders' meeting," he said. "Family members don't have a seat."
"She's my proxy for the afternoon," Margaret said. "I can name anyone I like."
"Fine." His smile was thin. "Then let's get to the agenda."
"I have a motion," said Calvin's mother.
She stood.
The whole table turned. She wore black, with her hair pinned back, and her hands were steady on the chair.
"Mother," Calvin said. "Not today."
"I move that Calvin Kenyon be removed as chief executive and as chairman of this company, effective at once."
Calvin laughed.
"On what grounds?"
"Present the grounds," said Calvin's mother.
The younger director stood and opened his laptop.
"Grounds are, one, a loan of forty million secured against shares Mr. Kenyon does not own. Two, an attempt yesterday to obtain a signature from a shareholder's daughter on a transfer of those shares, while that daughter's newborn was in the hospital."
