I did not take his hand.

I looked at it hanging in the air above the counter, a hand that had signed every withdrawal.

"Go ahead," I said. "Everyone's listening."

Dad lowered it slowly, but he kept his voice smooth and carrying.

"Chloe, I have made mistakes. I'm man enough to say it."

A few customers shifted in their seats.

"I took on too much. I thought I was helping the family.

"I used the money in a way your grandfather would not have approved."

"I'd like to put it right. I can pay two hundred dollars a month, starting now, until it's paid back."

"Two hundred," I said.

"Out of whatever I can earn. It's a real offer, and I'm making it in good faith."

"Dad, the amount is eighty-eight thousand."

"I know what it is."

"That's four hundred and forty months."

I had done the math on a napkin that morning.

"It would take you more than thirty-six years."

The old man at the end of the counter let out a low whistle.

Dad's jaw moved.
