Chapter 12: Twenty Weeks
Benedict called the whole lab into the canteen on Tuesday morning and put the black-bound claim on the table next to the biscuit tin.
"Right," he said. "They say we made it up."
Nobody spoke.
"So we're going to prove it twice. Then we're going to get two labs who've never heard of us to prove it again."
The twins looked at each other.
"Three times," said the one on the left.
"Four," said the one on the right. "Because they'll say three's a coincidence."
"Four," Benedict agreed.
Over the next three weeks, the lab ran around the clock.
The twins split every sachet into sealed thirds and couriered them to an outside lab in Manchester and another in Edinburgh, labeled only with numbers.
The night tech worked nights and then came in for the mornings too.
Finally Benedict sent her home in a taxi he paid for and said he didn't.
I bought every box of BrideGlow I could find in four London boroughs, with receipts.
Gran Chichester sent a cottage pie in a cool bag every second day, with a note taped to the lid.
"FOR PITTSBURGH. THE REST OF YOU CAN SHARE."
On Thursday of the second week, my phone buzzed with a text from Brody.
The first one since "Can you just be nice?"
"Mom threw the boxes out. I watched her do it. The choir girl's fine. I'm sorry about the rest."
I read it at my desk four times.
I didn't answer yet.
But I didn't delete it.
On the twenty-first of May the results came back from Manchester.
Sibutramine. Eleven point two milligrams a sachet.
Edinburgh came back the next day.
Ten point nine.
The twins screamed in micro so loud that the night tech, asleep on the sofa in the break room, fell off it.
