Chapter 12: The Cellar
Ruggero's POV
They took me down to the wine cellar through the service stairs, with a bag over my head and a man on each arm.
I let them.
I had counted the doors on the way in and knew the cellar had one way out.
They sat me in a wooden chair between two racks of dark bottles and tied my wrists behind it.
The bag came off.
Bianca's driver stood in front of me with his scarred eyebrow and a short length of pipe.
"Where's the priest?" he said.
"What priest?"
The pipe came across my ribs.
It hurt, and I was grateful it was only my ribs.
"The old man in Germantown. You were there Friday. You paid for his room."
"I was visiting my mother's confessor."
"Your mother's been dead nine years."
"Then I was early."
He hit me again, harder, and then a third time on the side of the head, and the cellar tilted.
I came up from it slowly, and heard heels on the stone steps.
The driver stepped back.
Bianca stood at the bottom of the stairs in her gray silk, with the crown still pinned in her hair and one hand on her stomach.
"That's enough," she said. "Go and stand at the top."
The driver went.
She came and crouched in front of my chair, and I smelled her perfume, something light and clean.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I never wanted this. I like you, Ruggero. You've been so loyal."
"To whom?"
"To the story. For twelve years, every time anyone asked, you said yes." She tilted her head. "A man who'd do that for a woman who doesn't even know what you did would do anything."
I said nothing.
"Where is the priest, and who has the recording?" she said gently. "Tell me, and you go home tonight. I'll even give you a ride."
"There's a recording?"
"Please don't."
