Chapter 13: Opening Day
I stared at that map until the screen went dark.
Then I woke it up and stared some more.
"Table twelve," Bree said over my shoulder. "They put you next to the thieves."
"Good," I said.
"Good?"
"I want to watch them cut it."
Ronan didn't say anything.
He just took a photo of the map and set it as the lock screen on his phone.
"Why would you do that?" I asked.
"So I remember to be there early," he said. "There's always a guy in a golf visor."
We opened on the first Saturday in June.
I got to King Street at three in the morning with the truck full of butter.
Bree was already there, sitting on an upturned bucket by the back door, smoking and swearing at the moon.
"You're late," she said.
"It's three."
"I've been here since two-thirty. I couldn't sleep. I threw up twice."
"Bree."
"Good throw-ups. Excited ones."
The two pastry cooks from Kearney came at four.
They'd quit the week before, both on the same morning, in front of the general manager.
