Chapter 14: The Lie
I didn't react.
I'd spent five years behind a counter on Broad Street.
I knew how to keep my face still while a customer told me something insane.
"Congratulations," I said. "What can I get you?"
Tara blinked.
She'd come in for tears, or a scream, or a cake knife.
"That's it? Congratulations?"
"The hand pies are gone. We've got biscuits and two slices of coconut left."
Behind me, Bree had stopped breathing.
Tara straightened up and looked at the line watching her.
"A coconut slice," she said. "And an iced latte. Oat milk."
"Eleven dollars."
She tapped her card on the reader.
It beeped and flashed red.
DECLINED.
She tapped it again, harder.
DECLINED.
The woman behind her in line looked at the ceiling.
Tara's face went pink under the makeup.
"It's the bank," she said. "It's a French card. They flag everything."
"Sure," I said.
She dug in her purse for a long time.
She came up with four dollars and some coins.
"Just the latte."
I made it myself.
I handed it across and didn't take her four dollars.
