Chapter 15: No Deal
The envelope sat on my cookie case all afternoon.
I didn't open it.
At closing, Bree finally picked it up with two fingers and held it to the light.
"A hundred and fifty grand," she said. "You know what I'd do with a hundred and fifty grand?"
"What?"
"Nothing. I'd sit in a bathtub full of it and cry." She put it down. "You're not taking it."
"I'm not taking it."
Monday at five to nine, I walked up the stairs over the Kearney flagship on Broad Street.
I wore my whites.
My name was stitched on the chest in blue thread by Bree, who'd stabbed herself four times.
The boardroom had a long table and oil paintings of men nobody remembered.
Nine people sat around it.
Brandon's father at the head. Brandon's mother at his right hand, in pearls.
Darren at the far end, tipped back in his chair, his watch on his left wrist.
Brandon's seat was empty.
"Mrs. Ashe," his father said. "Sit down."
"I'll stand. I've got bread proofing."
A woman at the middle of the table hid a smile behind her coffee cup.
I set the envelope on the polished wood, still sealed.
