Chapter 16: The Storm
By Friday afternoon, King Street was plywood from one end to the other.
Bree and the skinny pastry cook nailed sheets over my front window while I emptied the reach-in into coolers.
Somebody had spray-painted HANG ON, CHARLESTON across the bank on the corner.
The skinny cook painted PEACHES INSIDE, NOT REALLY on ours.
"Why?" I asked.
"Morale," he said.
The other cook lived in a ground-floor apartment in a flood zone.
Bree's roommate had left for her mother's in Columbia and taken the car.
"Everybody to the inn," Ronan said, when he came by with the truck. "It's brick. It's been standing since 1840. It'll stand through one more."
So we went.
By the time the rain started sideways on Saturday afternoon, Ashe House was full.
Eleven guests who couldn't get flights out.
The housekeeper, the desk clerk, the dishwasher and the breakfast server, with a grandmother, two kids and a very old beagle among them.
