Chapter 19: The Other Wife Walks In
A car door shut in the street.
I turned, with Kellen's hands still wrapped around mine.
A white SUV idled at the curb with a big man in a driver's cap behind the wheel.
The back door had just closed.
The first wife stood on the sidewalk in her gray coat, holding a clean casserole dish against her hip.
The SUV pulled away.
She watched it go, and then she looked at the two of us on her neighbor's porch.
"Oh, for heaven's sake," she said. "You've got faces like funerals."
"You were gone," I said. "The door was open. Someone said Francine took you."
"Took me to lunch. Yes, she did." She came up the walk. "She brought a pot roast. I let her drive."
"You got in her car?"
"I was in her car for four hours, dear. She bought me a cinnamon roll."
Her mouth twitched.
She marched into her duplex, set the dish on the oilcloth, and took a small gray recorder out of her coat pocket.
It was the kind a nurse uses for dictating notes.
"Colleen lent it to me," she said. "I thought, who knows Francine better than the woman she robbed?"
She pressed play.
Francine's voice filled the little kitchen, warm as bathwater.
"You're a sensible woman. Stay home Thursday, and there's forty thousand dollars in a bank envelope in this dish."
"A hardworking woman deserves a rest. The last girl was difficult. I'd hate for you to be difficult."
