Chapter 11: Darek's Phone

Darek's POV

Lila's building was a forty-minute train ride from Ansley's, and I spent all of it rehearsing what I would say.

None of it survived the elevator.

She opened the door on the second knock, in sweatpants, with her hair tied up and a half-packed suitcase open on the sofa behind her.

"Darek," she said. "I wondered when you'd come."

"You expected me."

"You flew to Charleston behind Devin's back. You're thorough." She stepped aside. "Come in. Don't touch the plants."

I sat on the arm of a chair.

She went back to folding sweaters, and she didn't hurry.

"Where are you going?" I asked.

"My aunt's in Tampa. I've decided I'm tired of this city."

"Does Devin know?"

"Devin was in the parking lot of Ansley's building until dawn, begging." She said it without any heat. "I saw it on his location. I don't think he'll be coming here."

"You track him?"

"We track each other. We always have."

I hadn't known that.

There was a lot I hadn't known, and I was starting to understand that I had been choosing not to for years.

"I'm not here to fight," I said.

"Then why?"

"Because Ansley is going to find out about round one, and I'd rather she heard it from someone who isn't Devin."

Lila put a sweater down.

"You think I'll tell you."

"I think you were furious last night. I think you let it slip because part of you wanted it out."

She laughed, a short dry sound.

"You always were the observant one."

"Is it true? Was round one yours?"

She looked at me a long moment.
