Chapter 12: Round One

I was standing at the kitchen counter with a cup of cold tea when Darek's message came in.

It was early afternoon on Tuesday, and I had slept for two hours.

The image loaded slowly.

Ten. I pick Ansley.

She's your friend.

That's why. She trusts me.

I read it standing up, and then I sat down on the kitchen floor with my back against the cabinet.

My mother came in from the living room and saw me there.

"Ansley?"

I handed her the phone.

She read it with her glasses pushed up on her forehead, and I watched her lips move on the last line.

"This is a joke," she said. "Tell me this is somebody's idea of a joke."

"It's dated October, two years ago. Three weeks before Lila's birthday dinner."

"The dinner where she introduced you."

"Yes."

My mother sat down on the floor next to me, which she hadn't done in thirty years, and put her arm around my shoulders.

"She won a game," I said. "And what she wanted for a prize was a wife for him."

"Ansley."

"She wanted a woman who wouldn't ask where he was." My voice was steady, and I didn't know where it was coming from. "She picked me because she knew I'd never check."

"You didn't know."

"I should have known. I checked the stove twice every morning. I checked the gas on every flight. I never once checked him."
