Chapter 13: Nobody Helping

I picked the diner on the corner, because it had windows and a waitress who knew my order.

My father drove me there and parked across the street with a newspaper he wasn't reading.

Devin was already in the back booth.

He had shaved, and he had put on a clean shirt, and he had a cup of coffee in front of him that he hadn't touched.

"Thank you for coming," he said.

"Don't thank me yet."

I slid in across from him and left my coat on.

"You said nobody helping," he said. "There's nobody. I didn't call Lila, and I didn't call my mother."

"Good. Then start at the beginning."

He rubbed his face with both hands.

"Lila and I were together in college," he said. "Off and on, for years. Nobody knew except Darek, and Darek didn't know the whole of it."

"You never told me that."

"I know."

"Why did you ask me out, Devin?"

"Because she asked me to."

The waitress came, and I ordered eggs I didn't want, and she went away again.

"Round one was supposed to be a joke," he said. "I thought she was drunk when she named the prize. I said yes because I thought she'd forget."

"She didn't forget."

"She brought you to the table three weeks later." He looked at the window. "You laughed at my joke about the bar menu. You asked me what I was afraid of, and I said nothing, and you believed me."
