Chapter 14: Until the Full Moon
Nobody in the yard moved.
The name he had said hung over the gravel, and every grown wolf on that slope knew what it meant.
Grandpa had gone still, with one hand flat on the top rail of the gate.
"The Ash Winter was thirty years ago," he said. "Your people made sure of that."
"My people made sure it ended."
"Your people made sure it started."
Alpha Eskildsen did not answer that. He reached into his coat and took out a folded paper, yellow at the creases.
"I carry the Ironwood hunting writ," he said. "It was signed by my father and the old council after the river. It says any mixed-blood found by an Ironwood hunter may be put down where it stands."
He held it up so the line of men behind him could see it.
"I have good reason to think there is one on this hill," he said. "I'm going to walk it, cabin by cabin."
"You are not," Grandpa said.
"Then I'll have my men do it."
Six rifles came up halfway.
Thirty people on the slope took one step forward, all together, and the gravel crunched.
Callie reached over and gripped my sleeve. Her hand was freezing.
Roark walked out in front of the line.
He went through the gate, which Grandpa had not opened, so he vaulted it.
He stopped between his father and every one of us, with his back to the clan and his face to the rifles.
"No," he said.
"Roark."
"Not one cabin. Not today."
"You are the heir of Ironwood." His father's voice stayed flat. "You swore the law at fifteen with your hand on that paper. Step aside."
