Chapter 23: One Shelf

I brought one box on Saturday afternoon, in the back seat of my sedan.

It held my good pillow, two pairs of clogs and a coffee mug with a chipped handle.

A pot with one sad plant rode on top.

Anselm carried it up the stairs in both arms.

"You're allowed to put it down," I said.

"I'm showing it respect."

"It's a box."

"It's your box."

He set it on the bed and stepped back.

He had cleared the shelf.

I had expected a bare plank, maybe a dusty pair of mittens.

What I found was the whole left half of his wardrobe emptied, with the hangers pushed to the far end.

A shelf at eye level was lined with a clean white towel.

"I said one shelf," I said.

"I cleared a bit extra. In case."

"A bit."

"It's a very small wardrobe."

"Anselm. It's three-quarters of the wardrobe."

He rubbed the back of his neck, and his ears went red.

"You can have the rest," he said. "I mostly wear the same vest."

I laughed until I had to sit on the bed.

I put my mug on the sill and the plant on the table beside the lamp.

I hung my navy scrubs next to his gray wool coat.

When I stepped back, the two of them hung side by side, and my chest hurt in a way I hadn't expected.

He was at the door watching me, with his hands in his pockets.

"What?" I said.

"It looks like somebody lives here."

"Somebody does."

"Yes," he said. "I know."

We ate dinner at the kitchen table.
