Chapter 12: The Spring Dinner
"When?" I asked.
"After the season," Lars said. "They want the original log out of the fleet's archive."
Above us, at the top of the gangway, the captain was leaning on the rail with his coffee.
He'd heard every word.
"Then they'll get it," he said. "And they'll get my statement with it. Get aboard, both of you. I don't wait for anybody either."
By the time we cleared the lift bridge, the cook had a sheet of paper taped to the galley door.
"Statements for the Second's hearing. Sign here."
By supper, twenty-three names were on it.
The spring dinner was on Saturday, May second, in the ballroom at the harbor convention center.
Four hundred people. White tablecloths. Press at the back. Every crew in the fleet at its own round table, in their good clothes.
The university's president sat at the table next to ours.
I wore a green dress Kat had made me buy and the cook had made me hem.
The chief wore her blue sweater.
Kat wasn't at our table.
She was in the booth at the back of the room beside the hotel's AV man, who'd worked a galley for twenty years and owed the cook a favor.
Mr. Engstrom gave a speech about the season.
Then the lights went down.
"Before I hand our newest engineer his job," he said, "I want you to see why I'm proud to give it to him."
