Chapter 12: What He Knew
Constance drove down the hill first, to find Ward and a pen.
Kerensa and Rafe sat in the truck at the top of the quarry road with the engine off and the light going orange.
"I need to tell you something," Kerensa said.
"You don't have to."
"I'm not her."
He did not move.
"I'm not Kerensa," she said. "I have her memories. I have her face. I don't have her life."
"I know."
She turned in the seat.
"How long have you known?"
"Since the first night." He kept his eyes on the windshield. "I came to the hospital after visiting hours and stood in the corridor outside her door. I didn't give my name. I just wanted to see her breathe."
"And?"
"On the third night she was sitting up. The nurse set down a tray, and you checked the tray before you touched it." His mouth moved. "You counted the exits. You tested the bed rail with your weight."
"I was tired."
"She apologized to doors," Rafe said. "You took one off its hinges walking out of the bathroom."
"That was a bad door."
"It was a bad door," he agreed, and finally looked at her.
His eyes were dark in the low light and completely steady.
"I'd like to know where you're from," he said. "If you want to tell me. I'll never ask twice."
She told him.
She told him about the ridge, and the wet leaves, and six hours of waiting for a stag that never stopped coming.
She told him how she had known the sound of its hooves, and what she had thought when it lowered its head.
She told him she woke up in a white bed in a stranger's body and had spent the first hour trying to find a weapon.
