Chapter 15: The Shoes
The lobby had filled while she was inside.
Gordon stood by the front desk with two lawyers, and Lorna sat on the bench beside Rafe's empty seat, small and pale in her navy coat.
Rafe had moved to the far wall.
He stood at the exit with his arms folded, exactly where she had told him to be.
Ward sat between two chairs with his head down.
His hands hung between his knees, and he did not look up when Kerensa came out.
"Detective," Gordon said. "My son has given a full statement. I expect you to act on it."
"I'll act on what I can prove, Mr. Haglund."
"You have an eyewitness."
"I have a page with a signature."
The lobby doors opened.
Constance came in alone.
She wore the plain wool coat and carried a canvas bag from her garden shed, held in both hands against her chest.
The room went quiet.
"Constance," Gordon said. "What are you doing here?"
"I'd like to give a statement," she said to the detective.
"Mrs. Haglund, this isn't the time," one of the lawyers began.
"I wasn't talking to you."
She walked past her husband without looking at him.
She set the canvas bag on the front desk and opened it.
Inside were a pair of women's white sneakers, wrapped in a pillowcase.
They were stiff with dried mud to the ankle, and a pale gray dust was packed along the edge of both soles.
"These belong to Lorna," Constance said. "She wore them on the sixth, the Friday our daughter fell."
Lorna stood up.
"Mom, what are you doing?"
"That night she washed them in the laundry sink for an hour. When she went up to bed I took them out of the trash and put them in my shed." Constance's voice shook once and steadied. "I told myself I'd throw them out in the morning. I couldn't."
