Chapter 22: The Duke's Fall
They brought the Duke out into the courtyard at noon in iron.
He still wore black velvet, and he had combed his hair.
Six blue guards walked him across the cobbles to a plain wooden bench in front of the ruined Rite Hall.
The whole duchy stood in the cold to watch him sit.
I had never seen so many people in that yard.
They crowded the walls and the gate and the burned steps, farmers and cooks and soldiers and women with babies in their shawls.
The dragon lay along the stable roof behind them with her chin on her claws.
Every head turned toward her from time to time, and every time they turned back.
The envoy stood on the steps with the ledger open on a lectern.
"Osric Thornfield, Duke by the king's grace," he said. "You stand accused before the people of your own duchy."
"By what law?" said the Duke.
His voice was still smooth.
