Chapter 17: Hers

We did not speak in the car.

My mother and Billie had gone ahead in the second car, arguing happily about who had made Warwick's table flinch.

Nathan held my hand in his lap the whole way, his thumb moving over my knuckles.

In the hall at Brookline he locked the front door, turned off the lamp, and stood watching me in the dark.

I climbed the stairs without him.

At the top I stopped between the two doors, his at the end of the hall and mine beside me.

I held out my hand.

He took it.

I did not take him toward his room.

I opened mine, the white bedroom with the bay window, and drew him in after me.

"Here?" he said.

"Here. This one's mine."

The streetlight made a pale square on the floor.

I turned my back to him and lifted my hair.

"Unzip me."

He went slowly, one inch at a time, and I felt each tooth of the zipper down my spine.

The green silk dropped to the carpet.

Nathan's breath went out of him.

"I'm twenty-seven," I said, "and nobody has ever looked at me the way you're looking right now."

"You're glorious," he said, rough. "Turn around."

I turned.

I was big and round and pale in the light, in a bra I could barely fasten and underwear he had never seen.
