Chapter 16: The Gala

The Seaport Grand ballroom had a ceiling painted like a night sky.

I walked under it in a new green gown, with my thirty-week belly leading the way.

Billie had picked the dress again.

She had told the tailor, "Do not hide anything. She is carrying the family."

Nathan held my elbow through the lobby.

My mother walked behind us in her church coat over a navy dress, with her purse clamped under her arm.

"Two hundred people," she whispered. "Where do they keep the bathrooms?"

"Ma."

"I'm only asking."

We had come on purpose.

Nathan had said, "We can skip it," and I had said, "He wants a room of people. Let's give him one."

The round tables were full of donors in black tie, eating salad and looking at my stomach.

Warwick sat at the table beside the stage, in a perfect tuxedo, with his silver hair combed back.

He lifted his glass to me from across the room.

"He'll make a speech," Billie muttered. "He always makes a speech."

When the plates were cleared, he walked up to the lectern and thanked the donors for their generosity.
