Chapter 15: The Letter

My mother woke in the chair, looked at the man in the doorway, and stood up.

"I'm going to find coffee," she said. "I'll be gone a long time. I'll take the stairs, and I'll stop at every floor."

She shut the door behind her.

Nathan stood with his back against it.

"You don't have to," I said. "I told you we'd wait."

"I know what you told me."

He took the cream envelope out of his jacket.

It was bent at one corner from a night in his pocket.

"I carried it down the corridor to see if I would drop it," he said. "I didn't."

"Is that a joke?"

"It was meant as one."

He sat on the edge of my bed, very carefully.

"She asked for a date," he said. "I made a promise to a dead woman, and I'm breaking it."

"I need you in the room when I do."

I held out my hand.

He put the envelope in it, and I split the seal with my thumbnail.

There were two folded sheets inside.

The first was in the looping blue ink I had seen on the front, and at the top it said, "Nathan."
