Chapter 29: The Last Rule

I took my hand off the bars.

"Okay," I said.

Ambrose looked at me. "Okay?"

"Okay. So that's the problem." I turned around. "Mouse. What day is it?"

"The last one."

"And who writes the last rule?"

Mouse looked up at me through her hair. Slowly, she held out the ledger.

"The mommy," she said.

I sat down on the marble with the red book in my lap. Mouse sat down beside me. Ambrose knelt on my other side.

The dead stood in their rows and watched.

Kyle stood at the bottom of the stairs in his apron, holding his mop.

"Mouse," I said. "Kyle's got a page of yours. Can you ask him for it?"

Mouse turned her head toward him.

"Pockets," she said.

Kyle's hands went into his vest pockets. He hadn't meant them to. I watched his face try to stop them.

They came out with a square of paper folded very small.

He walked it over and held it out. His jaw was clenched so hard I could see it jump.

I unfolded it.

Square, leaning capitals.

THE BRIDE'S NIGHTS DO NOT COUNT.

"You kept this in your pocket for sixty-six days," I said.

"Seemed like the smart move."

"Was it?"

He didn't answer. He went back to his stairs.

I tore the page in half. Then in half again.

It tore. Mouse giggled.

Then I opened the ledger to the clean page after my first rule, and uncapped the pen.

My hand wasn't shaking this time.
