Chapter 16: The Night Before
Mavis took one look at Holt's face in the hall and made up her mind.
"Poppy sleeps here tonight," she said. "Amos is on the couch and I am in the next room with the door open."
"Mavis."
"Go away, both of you. I don't want to know where."
Bryn opened her mouth.
"I said I don't want to know," Mavis said, and put a dish towel in her hand to hold.
Twenty minutes later a motel on Savannah Highway handed Holt a metal key on a plastic diamond.
The room had one lamp, a bedspread the color of old tea, and a window unit that rattled.
Bryn dropped her canvas bag on the chair, took a folded sheet from her back pocket and spread it on the bed.
It was the Sunday pin sheet, printed that afternoon, with a small circle on every green.
"The 14th is back right tomorrow," she said. "Behind the shelf, six paces from the edge."
She drew on the back of it with the motel pen.
"The green slopes toward the creek, and I know because I cut it every morning for three years."
"Land the ball short and right of the flag, here, and the slope will walk it left."
"If it's on your line it'll take the last four feet by itself."
