Chapter 17: Two
Poppy turned two on a Sunday, and she had been told so forty times before breakfast.
The cake was not a real cake.
It was yellow sponge from a box, baked in a rectangular pan, with frosting that Mavis had spread in six minutes.
It was six in the morning, and Holt had slept two hours.
"Two," Poppy announced. She held up three fingers, then thought about it and folded one down.
"Two!" said everyone in the kitchen.
Mavis lit the candles, one for Poppy and one for the girl in the framed photograph.
She stood the second one on the windowsill without a word, and nobody spoke about it.
Amos had slept sitting up on the couch with his boots on.
He came in with a yellow plastic putter wrapped in a dish towel and held it out to the birthday girl with great ceremony.
"For her first tournament," he said.
Poppy took it by the wrong end and hit Holt in the shin.
