Chapter 18: The Fourteenth
The creek under the fourteenth tee ran low and brown, and it made a small sound against the stones.
Eight thousand people were quiet around it.
Holt had never heard that many people hold still.
Calvin Stratford had the honor.
He pulled a five-iron and stood over the ball for a long time.
His jaw was tight, and the shadow of his cap lay across his eyes.
His swing was perfect, and the ball landed on the green and stopped fifteen feet from the flag.
The gallery applauded politely.
Calvin walked back from the tee mat with his eyes on the grass.
Holt stepped up.
Bryn was beside him with the bag, one boot on the edge of the tee box.
She handed him the club without looking at it.
"Six paces short of the shelf, and right," she said. "Let the slope do it."
"I know."
"I know you know."
He set his feet and looked across the creek at the flag.
