Chapter 10: Friday at the Title Company
Brightwater Title and Escrow was on the second floor of a glass office building off the highway.
I got there at a quarter to ten on Friday with a folder, a cup of coffee, and my hand still taped.
Sullivan had offered to come.
I had told him it was my fight, and he had said, "I know. I'd just like to carry the folder."
I had let him carry the folder as far as the elevator.
The conference room had a long table and a bowl of pens with the company's name on them.
Calvin was already seated at the far end in a navy suit.
Paula sat beside him, with her hands folded and her eyes red.
The title agent, a woman with a gray braid, stood to greet me.
"Mrs. Roark? I wasn't told you'd be attending."
"I'm not on the schedule," I said. "I'm a co-owner of the account the funds came from."
Calvin did not turn his head.
"Sonya, you're embarrassing yourself."
"Probably," I said, and sat down.
I put three sheets on the table and slid them toward the agent.
"The first is the bank's recall request, filed Monday morning. The second is a hold on the account, which requires both signatures. The third is a statement from my mother's estate."
She read the first page.
She read the second.
"Your mother's estate."
"Ninety thousand dollars of the money you were wired came from her. It was left to me, by name." I kept my voice low. "I did not agree to its use. Nobody asked me."
