Chapter 39: Perjury

On Thursday morning, Greta Voight was wheeled into the courtroom in a neck brace.

Judith's gold-edged card was folded in his jacket, and Troy had not answered it.

Hazel was with a sitter, and Judith's three words stayed on his mind: bring the child.

Her right wrist was wrapped to the elbow.

Troy watched the wheelchair come down the aisle and felt Molly's hand close on his knee.

Behind the chair walked Molly's father, in a pressed shirt somebody had bought him.

Molly did not look at him.

She looked at the back of the judge's chair and breathed through her nose.

"Clause four of the parties' own agreement," the gray-haired judge said. "Mr. Falk is charged with an act of violence. I'll hear the complaining witness."

Judith's lawyer smoothed his tie.

"Ms. Voight, tell the court what happened on the dock."

"I was holding the child." Greta's voice shook. "Mr. Falk ran at the boat. He grabbed my wrist, and he pulled me, and I went into the lake."

"Were you injured?"

"I had a fractured wrist and hypothermia. I couldn't sleep for three days."

She wiped her eyes with the bandaged hand.

Across the aisle, Judith sat in navy with her folder closed in front of her.

She did not look at Greta once.

Celia's lawyer rose for the cross.

"Ms. Voight, the child was in your arms when Mr. Falk reached the boat."

"Yes."

"And she was in his arms when you went into the water."

"He took her from me by force."

"Dane Ostrow's phone shows you backing away from Mr. Falk with your foot on the wet gunwale. Do you remember that?"

"I remember being terrified."

"Did you slip?"

"He pushed me."

"Show me where his hand touched you."

Greta lifted the bandaged wrist.

"Here."

"That is the only place?"

"That's the only place that matters."

Judith's lawyer smiled at his notes.

Celia's lawyer sat down.
