Chapter 4: Take You Back

Two weeks after the wedding, Troy still had no job.

Every resume he sent went into a hole.

He had signed a noncompete with Wainright Corporation, and it covered every company that could hire him.

Giselle's video of the corridor had spread across the city, and nobody wanted to anger the Wainrights over a stranger.

He had even applied to be a night security guard.

The background check came back, and they turned him down.

Molly had been living in his bedroom for two weeks.

She cooked, she kept the apartment spotless, and she asked for nothing.

That morning, over the toast, he finally asked.

"How did you know my name? That first day. I never said it."

Molly looked up from her plate, wide-eyed.

"Troy, everybody knows your name. Your wedding video has four million views. I recognized you the second you opened the door."

"Oh."

"I'm sorry. I should have said."

"It's fine."

He believed her.

It made sense, in an ugly way.

He picked up his keys and opened the door to go job hunting.

Greta Voight was standing in the hall.

She wore a charcoal suit, tailored to a point, and she was holding the frame of his door with one hand.

"Mr. Falk," she said, smiling. "Ms. Wainright sent me to take you back."

She did not say pick you up.

She said take you back, as if he had no say.

"No."

"Think about it first."

She put her foot in the doorway.
