Chapter 17: The Pearls
Lindy came to Calvin's office on Tuesday at noon, alone, with her hair tied back in a rubber band.
The office was a converted mill with brick walls, and his desk was buried in files and cold coffee cups.
She stood in the doorway in a plain gray sweater, and for a moment I did not know her.
She wore no lipstick and no sundress, and there was a bruise-colored hollow under each eye.
"I came on the bus," she said. "Neal took my car."
I sat behind Calvin's desk and did not offer her a chair.
Calvin stood by the window with his arms folded, a wall in tweed.
Lindy took a small velvet pouch out of her bag and held it in both hands.
"I wanted you to have these before anything else happened," she said.
She tipped the pouch, and my grandmother's pearls slid out into her palm, cream-white and warm from her skin.
She laid them on the blotter in front of me.
