Chapter 21: Lindy's Plea
The three of them were sentenced on a hot Friday in August, in a courtroom so full that people stood along the walls.
Neal went first.
He had pleaded guilty in June to fraud, to insurance fraud and to conspiring to confine a woman against her will.
He stood at the defense table in a jail-issue shirt that was too big, and his lawyer stood beside him with a folder he did not open.
The judge was a heavyset man with a quiet voice and a face like a closed door.
"Mr. Weldon, you may address the court."
Neal turned, and I saw him look for me in the gallery.
I was in the second row, with Calvin on my left and the older investor on my right.
I looked back at him and did not move.
His mouth began to shape my name.
Then something in my face stopped him, and he turned back to the judge.
"I have nothing to say," he said.
"A wise decision," said the judge. "Fourteen years, with no possibility of parole before the tenth. Restitution to the Underhill trust, to the investors of Weldon Harbor Partners, and to the insurer, in full, from every asset you own."
