The detective listened to the whole thing over the phone and sighed.
"I can't put a squad car outside a woman's house because her grandson might be rude to her."
"He's not going to be rude to her," I said.
"I know what you think he's going to do. I need more than a will." A pause. "I'll drive past. Every hour. Don't be heroes."
Gran's lawyer left Astor Street at nine with a briefcase and a worried face.
Gran sent her housekeeper to her sister's for the night and sat down at her kitchen table in a quilted robe.
Benedict made grilled cheese.
Hamlet's lessons had stuck. He used too much butter on purpose and looked at me to see if I noticed.
Zelda sat in the Dead by Dessert van in the back lane, behind the coach house, with the lights off and a thermos.
She texted me every twenty minutes.
"Still alive. Columbo would hate this. A raccoon looked at me."
[I didn't know I needed the grandma in a bathrobe eating grilled cheese]
"Henrietta," Gran said, around eleven. "Has he told you about the hotel?"
