At 6:30 on Saturday, June 6, I was alone in the pastry kitchen with a tart, or that was how it had to look.

Maxine stood at her bench in fresh whites. Two black plum tarts sat under glass cloches in front of her, dark crust, glaze like wet paint.

One was on a plain white plate.

The other was on the guest-of-honor plate, gold-rimmed, with the Northcott crest.

Behind the tall speed rack by the walk-in, the detective stood in a black velvet suit with her phone held flat against her chest, recording.

Upstairs, three hundred guests were drinking champagne under twelve chandeliers. Gran was at the center front table, and she had not moved since six.

Benedict was beside her. He had a card in his breast pocket that said THE HUSBAND.

At 6:37 the swinging door opened.

Edmund came in in a midnight tuxedo, smiling, his signet ring catching the light.

"Final inspection," he said. "Acting CEO. Humor me."

Maxine looked at me once.

Then she wiped her hands, said, "I need cream," and walked into the walk-in, exactly as rehearsed.
