By the time I got home, my principal had called twice and the video had passed ninety thousand views.

Cavan was sitting on my porch step with a paper cup of coffee, reading it on his phone.

He stood when I came up the walk.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I saw it an hour ago."

"Everyone saw it."

"Your sister is inside. She took the afternoon off."

I sat down on the step where he had been, and he sat beside me.

"What do I do?" I asked. "If I say nothing, I'm the woman who threw a child into the sleet. If I say something, I'm a bitter wife attacking a widow."

"Do you have the recording?"

"Of her in my kitchen."

"Don't use it yet."

"Why not?"

"Because it proves she's cruel, and cruel isn't a crime. People forgive cruelty if she cries after." He rubbed his thumb along the cup. "I'd use the one thing nobody can argue with."

"Which is?"

"The times."

I took out my phone and opened the screenshots.

The message at 8:14.

The reply at 8:19.

The bakery receipt at 9:01.

I posted all three in one picture, with no caption but a single line.

I wrote: This is what I was doing on the morning I lost my baby, and this is what he was doing.

Then I turned off the phone.

Leah had come out onto the porch behind us, and she read it over my shoulder.

"That's it?" she said.
