Chapter 17: Danielle Pays
By ten that morning, five women were standing on my porch with a lemon cake.
I knew them all.
They were the women from my living room, the ones who had eaten casserole under a banner while I stood locked out on my own porch.
The oldest, a woman in a gray wool coat, held the cake out in both hands.
"Audrey," she said. "We saw the video from the school. All of us did."
"I know."
"We were wrong. We believed her, and we should have asked you."
"You should have asked me before you came into my house," I said.
She flushed.
"Yes."
"I'll take the cake," I said. "I'm not going to say it's all right."
"We wouldn't ask you to."
The woman behind her stepped forward, a younger one in a church sweatshirt, with a notebook in her hand.
"There's something else," she said. "The fund."
"What fund?"
"Danielle told the congregation she was collecting for Otto's college. Daniel's memorial fund. We gave her eleven thousand dollars over two years. She asked us not to mention it to Hoyt, because he'd be embarrassed to accept charity."
Leah had come out behind me with a mug in her hand.
"Eleven thousand dollars," she said.
"We'd like it back," the woman said. "For Otto. We'd like to put it in an account where she can't touch it."
"Then come with me," I said. "I know where she is."
The rented house stood at the end of Cutler Street, a gray box with a sagging gutter.
There was a car in the drive and a man on the porch.
