Chapter 16: What That Morning Was

Audrey's POV

Hoyt stood on my porch under the lamp with the key held out in front of him, and I let him stand there.

"You said you know what you did," I said. "Say it."

"I put Danielle before you."

"That's what you did to Danielle. What did you do to me?"

He swallowed.

"I changed the cake," he said. "I let people hang a banner in your living room. I wasn't at the hospital when I should have been."

"You were at the hospital for one hour."

"Yes."

"Do you know what happened in the other hours?"

"No."

"Then I'll tell you," I said. "Once. I'm not telling it twice."

He nodded.

I put my back against the porch rail, because my legs wanted to go.

"At five that morning it started to hurt," I said. "You were in the shower. I told you through the door, and you said it was probably nothing and you'd be right out."

"I remember."

"By the time you were out, I was on the bathroom floor. You drove me. You were gray in the face, and I thought, good. He's scared. He understands."

"I was scared."

"At the hospital, the nurse put the monitor on my stomach, and she moved it, and moved it, and then she stopped moving it."

He closed his eyes.

"The doctor said it so gently I thought she was talking about someone else. And I looked for you, Hoyt. I looked for your face."

"I was right there."

"You were looking at the floor. Then you said the moving van was due and you'd be right back."

It was quiet on the street.

Somewhere down Linden Row a dog barked twice and stopped.

"The van was for Danielle's boxes," I said. "I texted you at 8:14 and asked you to come back. You answered at 8:19."
