Chapter 15: Hoyt's Hour

Hoyt's POV

The rented house across town had no heat, and I stood in its kitchen that night with my coat on and watched Danielle pack.

She had stopped crying in the car.

She folded Otto's shirts into a duffel and did not look at me.

"You'll calm down," she said. "You always do."

"Where is the money from the Ruddock account?" I asked.

"What account?"

"Daniel's. You said it ran out the first month."

She zipped the bag.

"I'm taking Otto to my mother's in Scranton," she said. "You can send what you owe. Twenty-four hundred, the first of the month."

"I owe you nothing."

"You owe my son."

"I owe Otto a better father figure than the man who let his mother lie to him," I said. "I'll see him. I'll see him with Cavan in the room. I'll pay for his school. I will not pay you."

She looked at me then, properly, for the first time in three years.

Her eyes were dry.

"Audrey won't take you back," she said. "You know that."

"I know."

"Then you have nothing."

"I know that too."

I took the house key off my ring, the one to this place, and laid it on the counter.

She said my name once more when I reached the door.

I kept walking.

I sat in my car in the dark after that, with my hands on the wheel.

My wife had texted me at 8:14 that she was alone in a hospital bed, and I had answered at 8:19 that her sister was coming.
