Chapter 7: Officers

Two officers stood on my porch with their flashlights lowered, and across the street every window on Linden Row had lit up.

"Ma'am, we got a call about a child," the older one said.

"He's upstairs asleep," I said. "He's fine. Come in."

Danielle came out of the living room behind me with her hand over her mouth, trembling all over.

"She won't let me near him," she said. "She's been keeping him from me since midnight."

"That's not true," I said.

"Ma'am," the younger officer said gently to Danielle, "has anyone hurt him?"

"No. But she's grieving. She isn't thinking clearly."

"I'd like you to see the room," I said.

They followed me upstairs while Danielle trailed behind, crying quietly.

Otto lay on his side in the guest bed with one arm flung over the pillow, whistling through the gap in his teeth.

The older officer looked at him for a good while.

"He looks all right," he said.

"He's safe," I said. "I put him to bed hours ago. His mother wanted to go up at two in the morning and wake him, and I asked her to wait until morning."

"She blocked the hall," Danielle said.

"I did."

"Why?"

"Because she was about to wake a six-year-old out of a dead sleep to make a point."

"I wasn't."

"Ma'am," the younger one said, "whose house is this?"

"Mine," I said. "My name is the only one on the deed. I can show you."

"Mine, too," Hoyt said.

He had come up behind us, white in the face.

"I'm her husband," he said. "I live here."

"Is she right? Is it her house?"

"It's," he said, and stopped. "Yes. It's her house."

"And Ms. Ruddock?"
