The Midsummer Tide came up the harbor stairs at dusk, higher than any tide of the year.
The Hall's great doors stood wide, and the city had come in off the quays.
Dockers filled the tiers.
Fishwives stood in the aisles with children on their hips.
The Crown's judge sat in the Archmage's chair, with the open ledger on his knee.
Ilsa stood on the floor beside the pool with Oren at her shoulder.
His eyes were green, and the sea in the pool lay perfectly still around him.
Bryn had carried Tuva in on her back.
She stood her sister down on the marble near the front, wrapped in a dockers' blanket, with a white bandage on her wrist.
Tuva could not stand straight, but she did not sit.
Hesper had come too.
She stood alone against a far pillar in her brown cloak, and nobody stood near her.
