Chapter 19: The Job Site
The Dunmore job was a three-story duplex with half its roof stripped to bare boards.
Four men worked up there in harnesses, tearing off old shingles, and a stack of new bundles sat on a lift by the curb.
The red truck was parked in front with its tailgate down.
Kaz got out of Fintan's pickup before it had finished stopping.
Behind them came a line of cars and the hardware store man's van.
Six old women followed in a minivan, driven by the youngest of them.
Gene was up a ladder with a nail gun in his hand.
He saw the crowd, and then he saw Kaz.
He came down the rungs one at a time, smiling the TV smile.
"Kasimir. You didn't have to come out to the job."
"I read your page," Kaz said.
"Ah."
"To the whole church. This morning."
Gene wiped his hands on his jeans.
"Let's talk about it in the truck."
"No."
The four roofers had stopped working.
One by one they came to the edge and looked down.
