Chapter 18: What a Father Built
The emergency room put six stitches over Averett's left eye and told him he had a concussion.
He sat on the edge of a bed behind a green curtain with a bag of ice in his hand and listened to the corridor.
Two police officers were out there with Jarek.
He could hear the low rumble of Jarek's voice.
Then he heard Quarles, flat and heavy, saying the man was a Kingsbury employee in good standing.
"He was fired yesterday," said one officer.
"Not by me," said Quarles.
The curtain rattled on its rail, and Whitaker Kingsbury came in.
He was in the same navy suit, and for the first time in his life he looked winded.
He stopped at the foot of the bed.
"Your eye," he said.
"Six stitches," Averett said. "It's fine."
"It is not fine."
Whitaker's voice was quiet.
He stood there, tall and stiff, with his hands at his sides.
Averett realized that his father did not know what to do with them.
