Chapter 22: The Booth
Jarek did not wait for permission.
He stepped off the stage in one stride and went down the center aisle at a run.
Eight hundred heads turned to follow him.
Tindle had a head start of forty feet and a locked door.
He reached the AV booth at the back of the ballroom, a glass box on a platform, and slammed the door behind him.
Averett saw him through the glass, bent over the console, dragging cables out of sockets with both hands.
On the screens, the call sheets flickered.
One went black.
Then another.
"He's killing the feed!" someone shouted.
"Leave it!" Averett said into the microphone. "Jarek, it doesn't matter!"
Jarek did not leave it.
He hit the booth door with his shoulder.
The frame split with a crack that rang off the chandeliers.
The door flew open, and Tindle spun round with a fistful of wires and the first real expression Averett had ever seen on his face.
